Embroidery stitches by Glori305 Embroidery stitches by Glori305
I was having a discussion with someone over on the forums about embroidery, and was going to link them to some tutorials on how-to.....and could not find any on DA.

Since I was working on a doll, I took pictures and made up a tutorial on the 5 basic stitches I use the most.

If you are doing plushies, this tutorial might help you as well

I wanted to try out embroidery (other than x-stitching) for a long time and I think your tutorial is going to be a great help.
I just have one question: what fabric would you recommand to start an embroidery like the ones showed in your tutorial?

I am using unbleached muslin in the tutorial.

I don't have any specific recomendations, I have embroidered on leather, fabrics from thin to thick.

I tried it once on jersey. bad choice! but I'll retry on hemp, I think, this might work.
and the needle is a regular sewing needle?

The needle is an embridery needle here, it is larger than a sewing needle, with a larger eye. If you are going to be sewing on hemp, make sure you get one with a sharp point (they come with sharper and rounder points) and you might want to try an embroidery hoop, to hold the fabric stiff. I never use them, but some people swear by them.

ok, I have a hoop. But I don't really get why the embroidery needle is larger. The thread may be bigger, but it shouldn't be too much of a problem with a sewing needle?
(Sorry for the many questions :ashamed:)

If you can get the embroidery floss thru the hole in the regular needle, should be fine. Can also embroider with with regular sewing thread, just thiner than embroidery floss.

Having good thread that doesn't snag helps, too.
